Marlene D. Pope McGlothlin
05/17/1933 - 01/03/2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Marlene D. Pope McGlothlin, who left us on January 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Marlene was a cherished mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and friend whose kindness and warmth touched the lives of everyone who knew her.
Marlene was born on May 17, 1933, and grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois. After graduating from high school, she became a dental hygienist. In 1953, she married James C. Pope. They gradually moved east, ending up in the then-new town of Reston, Virginia, in 1966. There, they were one of the first 600 families. They divorced in 1973. Marlene continued to live in Reston until 1992.
Marlene then met Ernie McGlothlin while vacationing with her daughter in Kitty Hawk, NC. Their attraction blossomed, and they married in Manassas, Virginia, on January 4, 1992. They loved having family and friends visit them at their houses in Grandy, VA, Southern Shores, and Kitty Hawk, N.C. We lost Ernie in 1996, and Marlene subsequently moved to LeisureWorld in Leesburg, Virginia, where she lived for 20 years.
A loving and devoted mother, Marlene is survived by her daughter, Patti Jean Warren (Dan), and her sons, Craig W. Pope (Janet) and Andrew J. Pope (Sasha). She was also a proud grandmother to four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Marlene was passionate about travel. She enjoyed cruising and the senior bus trips she took while living at LeisureWorld. She was also an avid reader, always finding joy and comfort in a good book.
After a private funeral service in the spring, she will be buried in Southern Shores Cemetery near her dear Ernie. Marlene will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory and the love she gave will remain in our hearts forever.
