Patricia "Pat" Cooney

08/31/1926-02/24/2025

Patricia “Pat” Cooney passed away on February 24, 2025 at the age of 98. She was born in Highland, Michigan to Donald and Ruth Taylor. Pat graduated from Hillsdale College in1948 (Michigan) and settled in Chicago to begin her teaching career. She met her husband, John “Jack” Cooney, while teaching on the south side of Chicago and married in 1951. They relocated to Indiana to raise a family and made their long-term home in Munster, IN.

Pat taught at St. Thomas Moore Elementary School (Munster) and stepped into the role of acting Principal before retiring in 1986. In addition to teaching, Pat supported the parish as an active volunteer in the Altar and Rosary Society and other charitable organizations. In retirement, she moved to Arizona and joined the parish of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and volunteered in the education office well into her 80’s. In 2017, she moved to Louisville, KY to be closer to family.

Pat enjoyed playing golf and hit her stride in the Arizona sunshine. She loved competing in the women’s golf league and organizing 55 Plus social events and travel excursions. She was an avid bridge player and loved card games of all kinds including Bingo! As a devout Catholic, she instilled the values of her faith in her family and followed the teachings of the church. Being a member of the Catholic community provided her with a sense of belonging and offered comfort and reassurance throughout her life.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years and her siblings. She is survived by her daughters Carolin Rios of Columbus IN, Kathleen Keasler of Seattle WA and Susan (Mike) Overton of Louisville, KY; granddaughters Emily Myers and Lily (Adam) Yarnell; her beloved great grandson Michael Myers Gomez, goddaughter Eileen Cooney, sister-in-law Corine Taylor and many nieces and nephews.

Pat will be laid to rest beside her husband in the veteran’s section of the Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona.

Carolin and family, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

I was privileged to get to hear many stories over the last eight years about the various “Pat Happenings” from my dear friend Carolin. I never had the pleasure of knowing Pat in person, but I am blessed to be friends with her daughter, and for that I am grateful. May warm memories of her cherished life bring comfort today and always. Sending love from New Mexico.
