Why Families Choose Magnolia for Medicaid Cremation
Most funeral homes don’t accept Medicaid. Here’s why Magnolia is different:
- We accept Medicaid daily and bill the state directly.
- In-house cremation services mean no outsourcing and lower costs.
- Immediate assistance: we never delay your care while waiting for reimbursement.
For most qualifying families, this means no out-of-pocket cost at all.

Who Qualifies for Indiana Medicaid Burial Assistance
You may be eligible if your loved one was enrolled in one of these Medicaid categories at the time of passing (or had a pending application later approved):
- MA A – Medicaid Aged (65+)
- MA B – Medicaid Blind
- MA D – Medicaid Disabled (Under 65)
- MASI – Medicaid for SSI recipients or related categories
- MADW – Medicaid for Disabled Workers (M.E.D. Works)

❌ Not Eligible: MADI (Disability Improved) or any non-listed categories.

Does Indiana Medicaid pay for cremation?
Yes. Indiana Medicaid pays up to $1,200 toward cremation through the FSSA Burial Assistance Program.
The deceased must have been enrolled in a qualifying Aged, Blind, or Disabled Medicaid category at the time of death.
A licensed cremation provider must file the claim within 90 days. See full eligibility rules.
Which Indiana Medicaid categories qualify for burial assistance?
Six categories qualify:
MA A (Aged 65+), MA D (Disabled under 65), MAB (Blind), MADW (Disabled Workers / M.E.D. Works), MASI (SSI Recipients), and MA R (Residential Care).
Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) and MADI (Disability Improved) do not qualify.
A licensed funeral provider can verify the category directly with FSSA at no charge.
What is the deadline to file an Indiana Medicaid burial assistance claim?
The claim packet must be filed within 90 days of the date of death. There is no extension. After 90 days, the $1,200 benefit is forfeited.
Only a licensed funeral home or cremation provider can file State Form 35937 with FSSA. Families cannot apply directly.
Why do most Indiana funeral homes refuse Medicaid?
Two reasons. FSSA reimbursement can take 60 to 120 days, and providers who outsource cremation must pay vendors upfront.
The Indiana average cremation cost is around $2,295 per Funeralocity, well above the $1,200 benefit, so many providers require families to pay the full balance instead of accepting Medicaid as payment in full.
Does Medicare pay for cremation in Indiana?
No. Medicare does not cover cremation, burial, or funeral expenses in any state. Medicare is health insurance for medical care during life. Indiana Medicaid is the only government program in Indiana that pays toward cremation, and only for recipients in qualifying Aged, Blind, or Disabled categories. The two programs are separate.
What if my loved one had a pending Medicaid application when they died?
They may still qualify. Per FSSA rules, individuals who applied for Medicaid before death and are later approved in a qualifying category remain eligible for burial assistance. The 90-day filing deadline still applies, even if the Medicaid determination comes after death. Verification continues during the claim review.
What information do I need to verify Medicaid cremation eligibility?
Three pieces of information: the deceased's full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number.
A provider that works with FSSA can call 800-403-0864 to confirm the Medicaid category, usually within one hour during state business hours (Monday through Friday). Verification is free and carries no obligation.
What if my loved one does not qualify for Medicaid burial assistance?
Several other paths exist. Indiana families can apply for township trustee assistance through their local trustee office. Veterans may qualify for VA burial benefits. A surviving spouse can apply for Social Security's $255 lump-sum death payment. Whole-body donation programs sometimes include no-cost cremation when the donor is accepted.
