Bennie Smith

Bennie Smith, 86, of Salem, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026. He was born on July 31, 1940.

Bennie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, playing games, and enjoying the outdoors. Bennie especially loved camping and being part of his community, where he knew and cared for many people.

Bennie ran the Salem Super Wash for 14 years and was a proud member of the American Legion – Salem Branch. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends.

Bennie is survived by his wife, Sheila Smith; Jennifer Crain, Brian Crain, Susan, Steve, Bobby, and Terry; his brothers, Mike Smith and Ray Smith; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Flora Roberts-Smith and Wardell Smith; and his siblings, Kenneth Smith, Gibb Smith, Leroy Smith, Cecil Smith, Veda Naugle, Bernice Garrett, Fran Bowling, and Sandy Graham.

A Special Note

A special note of love and appreciation goes to Lori and Randi Coates for everything they shared with Bennie, including their lasting friendship and the special family bond they had together. Their love, support, memories, and presence in Bennie’s life meant more than words can express and will always be cherished.

Bennie will be remembered for his love of family, the outdoors, camping, and the many lives he touched throughout the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date by the family.
