David Joel “Joe” Childers

David Childers, age 67, died on Feb. 12 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on March 21, 1957, he was the son of Harold and Marjorie Childers, who both preceded in death.

He received a bachelor’s in education degree from Indiana University and a master’s in education from Indiana Wesleyan. He was an educator and coach in Brown County Schools, Brown County, Indiana; Monroe County Community Schools, Bloomington, Indiana; and Indianapolis Public Schools in Indianapolis. He was an administrator for the Bureau of Indian Education, Chinle University School District in Chinle, Arizona, and he also was a facilitator for Solution Tree Educational Services in their Friendly Schools Plus Social Emotional Learning Program.

He served as an officer in and retired from the United States Army Reserves. His military service included active duty in the Gulf War. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Episcopal Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Molly Kathleen Childers (husband Alexander Hernandez); a son, Samuel Ingram Childers; a grandson, Braylen Childers Hernandez; former wife Julie Cheryl McClure; and Scooby, a faithful canine companion. A sister, Jill Childers, preceded in death. A beloved father and grandfather, he will be eternally missed and forever remembered.

Cremation was chosen and Magnolia Cremations of Jeffersonville, Indiana has been entrusted with the arrangements.
