“BROKEN HALO” DOUGLAS GENE BULL, GALLATIN, TN., 51

Douglas Gene Bull went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 02, 2023, at the
young age of 51. He died of a heart attack brought on by a lifelong battle
with addiction & mental health issues. He was born & raised in Gallatin, TN. April 03, 1972. He was living in a sober living home in Elizabethtown, KY.,
at the time of his passing. Doug is survived by his loving estranged wife of
25 years, and 3 beloved children: Amber, Dalton, & Tyler; his stepson, as
well as his 4 grandchildren: Kenzly, Paizly, Aubrey & Bentley & his father Ernest Bull Jr. & cherished stepsister Angela “Angie” Hodges.
Doug was preceded in death by his adored, WWII veteran, Grandfather
Douglas Ballard, Mary Louise Ballard (Grandmother), & his beloved Mother
Mariane Jane Ballard-Warren, distinguished members of the Gallatin
community.

Doug was the kind of man that would just draw you to him like a moth to a
flame. He had a vibrant and intoxicating energy about him. He was so
passionate about life, love, style, music & tattooing. He was an entertainer,
& so very animated. He made people laugh until their sides ached. He
would do anything to make people smile. He was edgy, stubborn &
rebellious, an outlaw in spirit & attitude. He was a fighter (like his grandpa)
to be sure. His war was with an enemy he didn’t understand. Doug had a
hard life growing up & was let down by many who were supposed to lead,
guide, & and protect such a sensitive soul. All he ever wanted was to be
loved & love others in return. He wasn’t equipped with the weapons needed
to conquer the adversaries that came against him, so he turned to drugs to
ease his suffering. People don’t become addicts to bring pain, shame, &
guilt to their loved ones. They become addicts to try to “fix” what is broken
in them. It does the opposite and takes them further away from what they
wanted all along. After he lost his family, his home, & his dignity he sought
the help he needed. He came to the end of himself & surrendered to the
Lord. I remember once he told me how he wanted to help others come out
of the darkness. He said who better to show them, than someone who’s
been there. He was on that path last year. He was the prodigal son on his
way home. Doug was pursuing his G.E.D. & was taking classes to become
a Peer Counselor; he was a Sponsor as well. Doug had been helping bring
in more lost and wandering souls to recover. He had found his brothers and
sisters in arms. God helped him to live out his purpose, reconnect with
family, & friends & leave his broken halo as a lantern of the redemptive
power of the Lord, to light the way of other weary travelers.

A Celebration of Life for Doug will be a private affair for family & friends

only. Announcements will be made soon.

I loved him like a big brother. We shared many laughs and many tears. But I am honored to know that he reached out to me and asked for help and I gave him the tools to start a beautiful journey. Love ya brother give Mom and Dad a hug for me.

Doug was my little brother (only by 25 days he would correct me) who was so much fun to grow up with. I will cherish our happy days when we were kids just trying to have fun on go carts and 3 wheelers. I will see you later Doug. I know what your address is and exactly how to get there. I pray you finally have total peace in your heart and soul
