In Memoriam: Dr. Prasad Kulkarni
Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Louisville

It is with profound respect that we announce the passing of Dr. Prasad Kulkarni, Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Louisville, who passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at the age of 82.

Dr. Kulkarni was dedicated to advancing ophthalmic education, research, and patient care throughout his notable career. As a respected mentor to numerous medical students and residents, he was widely recognized for his exemplary leadership, clinical expertise, and steadfast commitment to the field of visual sciences.

A native of India, Dr. Kulkarni was born in 1943 and received his Bachelor of Science before moving to the United States, where he earned a doctorate in pharmacology from the State University of New York. He served as Assistant Professor at Columbia University for eleven years prior to joining the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Louisville in 1987.

Dr. Kulkarni played a significant role in developing the department and focused his research on glaucoma and retinal diseases, making substantial contributions to scientific understanding and patient care. His pioneering work included investigations into prostanoids in ocular tissues and the discovery of prostacyclin (PGI₂), a coronary vasodilator.

Dr. Kulkarni was highly regarded not only for his professional achievements but also for his wisdom, integrity, and compassion. His colleagues valued his steady presence and humility, while his former students remembered his patient mentorship and commitment to excellence, which shaped both their professional and personal growth.

He is survived by his niece, two nephews, and grandchildren, who brought him great pride and joy. Dr. Kulkarni’s legacy will be honored by his family, colleagues, students, and the many patients whose lives he enriched.

The family requests that memorial donations be directed to the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology to support ongoing research and educational efforts in the discipline to which Dr. Kulkarni devoted his life.

His enduring impact on vision science and patient care will continue to inspire future generations.
