The first time I met John was at a Friday night meeting. John was at a military recovery house just down the street. I shooke his hand and introduced myself. A deep raspy voice responded John. Before the meeting started I noticed he was sitting to the very back. I invited him to come sit closer but he didn’t. But he did do the one thing that started him in recovery. HE KEPT COMING BACK! By the 3rd time I invited him to sit closer he did. He sat next to me in the front row. The 4th Friday night meeting I asked him to read Acceptance from the AA Big Book. Reading Acceptance from the BB help me when I first got sober. I think it also helped John. Last October I presented John with his 12 year medallion . The last thing I said to him was. I’m going to miss you. You see I wasn’t just his sponsor. I was his friend.
