Larry L. McLain

October 21, 1948 – November 14, 2025

Larry L. McLain, a beloved father, friend, and community fixture, passed away on November 14, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on October 21, 1948, Larry lived a life filled with hard work, humor, and genuine kindness that touched everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his children Melissa, Larry II, and Lori; his stepson Chandler; his adopted daughter Rachael; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Tammy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian Lynn Hayes-McLain; his parents, Dorothy Kellems and Ernest McLain; and his granddaughter, Schyler McLain.

Larry’s life was shaped by his many talents and the countless roles he embraced over the years. A “master mechanic,” he could fix just about anything. He loved to fish and was a lifelong animal lover—even having a pet turkey named Turk at one point.

Affectionately known as the “Mayor of Milltown,” Larry had a personality that filled every room. His humor and gift for storytelling made him a natural jokester, always ready to bring a smile or offer a much-needed laugh.

Larry graduated from Corydon High School in 1966. His work history was as diverse as it was meaningful: limousine company owner, Toyota employee at the Georgetown plant, semi-truck driver, and substitute teacher at Crawford County Jr.–Sr. High School, where students and staff appreciated his patience and wit. He also spent time at Cave Country Canoes, sharing his warm personality with visitors.

Above all, Larry will be remembered for his generosity, his laughter, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. His legacy lives on in the stories told about him, the skills he passed down, and the love he gave so freely.

A memorial service will be held at English Baptist Church in English, Indiana, on Saturday, December 13, at 2:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Animal Protection Association (APA) in Jeffersonville, IN. Memorial checks may be mailed to APA at P.O. Box 4276, Jeffersonville, IN 47131. The APA also accepts donations online via PayPal or Venmo.

Pops was such a comedian- he’d get me laughing so hard I could barely breath & or always ended up crying. Him giving Veronica a 0400 am Rooster aka RooRoo was the best gift ever… simply because you & that bird sent my youngest girl into the 4-H world of competition, college & her new carrier in “our community “.
Pops you were & always will be “the step up to the plate (father figure) my oldest girl Rachael could have ever been blessed with. You not only gave her your time but you taught her how to work on her vehicles to save $ while spending quality & cherished time together. Honestly, I don’t know how either of my girls may have turned out… but you & Vivian aka Mom were the best influences a mother could ever ask for mentoring & always being present in their lives-no matter what… always brightened my day because our tribe was strong together.
Love you Pops,
Rebecca Adams
