4/23/1973 - 7/2/2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Neal Petty, who left this world on July 2, 2025, at the age of 52. Richard was born on April 23, 1973, at Edwards Air Force Base in Lancaster, California, and spent his life making a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard was the beloved son of Randall Petty and stepmother, Myra Thompson Petty. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marsha Heiser Petty Smith, stepfather James N. Smith Jr., and his cherished grandparents, Gerald and Clara Heiser, George and Mattie Wagner Petty.

He is survived by his devoted father, Randall, stepmother, Myra, and his loving siblings: sisters Hope Renee Werner (Robb) and Aprile Oster, brother James Smith, and his granddaughters, Sophia and Aleah, as well as his dear niece, Brianne.

A proud graduate of Oldham County High School in 1991, Richard went on to become a dedicated mechanic at Papercone Corporation, where he was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Richard’s passion for his work was only rivaled by his enthusiasm for life and the interests that brought him joy. He was an avid fan of the University of Louisville basketball and various motor sports. He loved bowling, adventuring with granddaughter Sophia while hiking through the park, swimming, and eating out.

Richard's life was characterized by his warmth, kindness, and unique sense of humor. He cherished his family and many friends deeply and was a pillar of support and love for them. He took great joy in being a part of their lives.

A Celebration of Life will be held in honor of Richard on August 23, 2025, from 2:00–5:00 PM at Jim Miller/Thoroughbred Hall, 10609 Watterson Trail, Jeffersontown, KY 40299, where family and friends can come together to share memories and celebrate the life Richard lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Randall and Myra Petty to assist with expenses at 10302 Charleswood Rd, Louisville, KY 40229.

As we remember Richard, let us carry forward his spirit of kindness, love, and humor. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends, inspiring us to treasure each moment and nurture our relationships.

Although I did not know your son, I have fond childhood memories of time spent with our Grandparents Charley and Floy Wagner. My heart hurts for you all.
