Thomas Emmett McGee
10/9/1937-11/05/2025
Thomas Emmett McGee, 88, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025. Born on October 9, 1937, in Buffalo, New York, Tom was the beloved son of Hugh and Helen McGee and grew up surrounded by a close-knit family that shaped his generous and thoughtful spirit.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Jana McGee; his son, Matthew McGee; and his brother, Robert McGee. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Helen McGee, and his brothers, John and Joseph McGee.
A man of many talents and quiet passions, Tom lived a life guided by creativity, curiosity, and compassion. Though he spent most of his career as a civilian employee at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, his heart always remained tied to the arts. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame, he went on to complete a master’s degree in set design from the Indiana University Bloomington theater department. That artistic foundation found its way into every home he lived in, where he delighted in decorating, remodeling, and creating spaces that reflected beauty, warmth, and character.
Tom served his country with pride in the United States Army Reserves from 1960 to 1966, receiving an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He carried with him a sharp wit and a famously dark sense of humor—an inheritance his children lovingly acknowledge as both a blessing and a curse.
He had an abiding love for automobiles and car racing, eager to learn about any new model or mechanical innovation. In addition to his hobbies, Tom devoted much of his life to supporting wildlife and humanitarian causes. He was a longtime contributor to the World Wildlife Fund, Doctors Without Borders, and numerous other organizations whose missions aligned with his compassionate heart.
Above all, Tom was a kind, gentle, and generous man—someone who gave freely, laughed fully, and cared deeply. His thoughtfulness left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In accordance with his wishes, Tom’s remains have been cremated. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to make donations in his name to their local Humane Association, continuing the legacy of kindness he lived every day.
