How does the cremation process work?

The cremation process works by using intense heat, roughly 1,400 to 1,800°F, to reduce the body to bone fragments inside a chamber called a retort. A cycle runs about four hours. Those fragments are then processed into a fine, grayish-white powder and returned to your family, usually within 7 to 10 business days.

The six-step short version:

  1. Transfer into our care. We bring your loved one from the place of passing to our crematory in Jeffersonville, Indiana. A permanent metal ID tag goes on at that moment.

  2. Preparation. Pacemakers and other battery-powered devices come out for safety. Your loved one is washed and positioned. No embalming is required for direct cremation.

  3. Placement in a container. A rigid, fully combustible container, usually fiberboard. No casket is required under the FTC Funeral Rule.

  4. Cremation. One person at a time, in a sealed chamber, with the ID tag inside. Roughly four hours, longer for larger individuals.

  5. Processing. Metal is separated out. Bone fragments are reduced to a fine, uniform consistency, under one-eighth of an inch.

  6. Return to your family. Pickup in Jeffersonville or Louisville, or shipping by USPS. Most families have their loved one back within 7 to 10 business days.

What is cremation?

Before you can answer how does cremation work, it helps to know what it is. Cremation reduces the body to bone fragments through heat, then reduces those fragments to a sand-like consistency. It is not burning in the way most people picture it. The practice is also far from new. The oldest known cremation dates back roughly 40,000 to 42,000 years, discovered at Lake Mungo in Australia according to Britannica, and the first crematory in the United States was built in 1876, per the Cremation Association of North America. Today it accounts for nearly 62% of all dispositions nationally in CANA's 2025 Annual Statistics Report, based on 2024 data.


We are licensed funeral directors serving families throughout Kentucky and arranging cremations across Indiana. Every cremation we perform happens at our own crematory in Jeffersonville. Once in our care, your family member remains with us through the entire process. We don't outsource.

What happens during the cremation process?

So how does the cremation process work once your loved one is in our care? Six steps, from the first phone call to the day you take them home. This is how it runs at our own facility, and the sequence is close to universal, though the paperwork differs by state.

Step 1: Transfer into our care

We transport your loved one from their place of passing to our crematory in Jeffersonville, IN. We pick up from homes, hospitals, hospice facilities, nursing homes, and coroner's offices throughout Kentucky and Indiana.

  • A permanent metal ID tag is placed with your loved one the moment they enter our care. The tag has a unique tracking number and stays with them through every single step, including inside the cremation chamber. It's made to withstand temperatures well above 1,800°F.


  • We typically complete transfers within 24 hours once your loved one is released by the facility. A coroner hold or an autopsy can delay that release, which is beyond our control. We'll stay in close contact about timing.

Step 2: Gentle preparation of the body

Before the cremation process begins, we prepare your loved one. Some of this is required for safety. The rest is how we choose to do things.

  • Removing medical devices: Pacemakers, insulin pumps, defibrillators, and other battery-operated devices are carefully removed. These can react dangerously at high temperatures, so their removal is required for safety. Brachytherapy seeds (small radioactive implants sometimes used in cancer treatment) are also removed when present. Surgical implants like hip or knee replacements can stay. They'll be separated from the ashes later, along with dental work, which doesn't survive intact.

  • Cleaning and positioning: Your loved one is gently washed and respectfully positioned in the cremation container. Conditions like a fused spine, severe curvature, or contracture don't change this. The body relaxes somewhat after death, and repositioning as needed is a routine part of preparation, not an obstacle to cremation.

  • No embalming needed: Direct cremation doesn't require embalming, which saves cost and avoids harsh formaldehyde-based chemicals. Embalming may be recommended or required by the provider when a public viewing is planned.

  • Personal items and clothing: Jewelry and keepsakes are documented and returned to your family upon request. Some families ask that a wedding ring or religious item stay with their loved one, and we'll honor that, though jewelry is typically destroyed at these temperatures. Your loved one is cremated in either a simple gown or the clothing they were wearing, and we'll use specific clothing if you'd like to provide it.

Step 3: Placement in a cremation container

Your loved one is placed in a fully combustible container, usually made of fiberboard or thick cardboard. It's sturdy enough to hold weight safely and burns completely during the cremation process.


No casket is required. The FTC Funeral Rule prohibits requiring families to purchase a casket for direct cremation. A rigid, combustible alternative container is standard and accepted. The container is placed directly into the retort on a mechanical tray system. The ID tag remains with your loved one and is visible throughout.

Step 4: Cremation in a secure, private chamber

The retort is lined with fire-resistant bricks rated to withstand temperatures above 2,000°F. Modern retorts like ours are powered by natural gas burners and equipped with computerized temperature controls that regulate heat throughout the cycle.

  • What happens inside the chamber: The temperature reaches 1,400 to 1,800°F, and the process runs in two stages. In the primary chamber, intense heat causes all soft tissue (skin, muscle, organs, fat) to break down and vaporize. Those gases, primarily carbon dioxide and water vapor, move into a secondary chamber for further combustion, then pass through the facility's emissions filtration system before release. A full cycle is planned at roughly 4 hours, and can run longer, up to 5 to 6 hours, for larger individuals. What's left in the primary chamber afterward is calcified bone fragments and any metal surgical implants.


  • Body size affects how long the cycle runs: Our retort accepts a body up to 40 inches wide and 36 inches tall, and holds up to 1,000 pounds. In more than 20 years, I personally haven't encountered anyone who didn't fit. We don't charge extra for size or weight.


  • Only one person at a time: In Indiana, a crematory may not perform a simultaneous cremation of more than one individual in the same chamber without the prior written consent of the authorizing agents (IC 23-14-31-39). Kentucky goes further and declares simultaneous cremation unlawful outright, with no consent exception (KRS 367.97514). Between cremations, staff let the chamber cool to under 800°F, then clear it in two passes: a long metal tool moves bone fragments toward the removal door, and a wire-bristled tool works the corners and edges. A high-heat vacuum removes the remaining fine powder.

  • After the cycle completes, the retort must cool for 1 to 2 hours before ashes can be safely handled.

Step 5: Processing the ashes

Once the retort has cooled, we complete the final steps of the cremation process.

  • Metal removal: Any remaining metal (surgical pins, screws, joint replacements) is removed by hand or with strong magnets. Most families have these items recycled, but we can return them if you prefer, as long as we know before cremation. One exception: pacemakers are never returned, since they can pose a shock risk once removed.

  • Processing bone fragments: What remains after cremation are brittle, calcified bone fragments. They don't look like "ashes" yet. These fragments are placed in a device called a cremulator, which grinds them into a fine, uniform consistency, under one-eighth of an inch. That threshold isn't just convention. Indiana sets one-eighth of an inch as the particle size at which ashes may be disposed of in any lawful manner (IC 23-14-31-44). The result is a grayish-white powder with a texture similar to coarse sand. Individual bone fragments aren't identifiable at that size. Some families ask for the fragments to be left unprocessed for religious reasons, which keeps the pieces larger and more recognizable.

  • Final weight: Most adults produce 3 to 7 pounds of ashes, depending on body size and bone density. We place the ashes in either a temporary container or an urn you've selected.

Step 6: Returning the ashes to your family

Once processing is complete, we contact you to arrange pickup or shipping.

  • In-person pickup: Available at our Jeffersonville, IN, location or our Louisville, KY office during business hours. Many families prefer this because they can ask final questions and receive their loved one directly.

  • Secure shipping: The USPS is the only carrier that legally transports cremated remains. As of March 2025, USPS requires the Priority Mail Express Cremated Remains box (BOX-CRE) for all shipments, with tracking and insurance. Magnolia offers shipping for a flat rate of $125.

  • Timeline: Most families receive ashes within 7 to 10 business days from the date of cremation.

Can you witness a cremation?

Yes. Some families find comfort in being present when their loved one enters the chamber. It can feel like a final act of care. Others would rather not be there, and that's just as common.


At Magnolia, witnessing is available as an add-on to our direct cremation service for $300. You'll observe through a viewing window at our Jeffersonville crematory. Because of the space, witnessing is limited to two to three immediate family members.


A few things to know before scheduling:

  • Timing depends on authorizations: We can't schedule a witnessing until all legal paperwork is complete. The next-of-kin authorization and the required permit both need to be in hand first. Once those are secured, we'll work with you to find a time that works.

  • What to expect: The witnessing itself is brief. You'll see your loved one's cremation container placed into the retort, and you can take a moment of silence, say a prayer, or simply be present. Some families bring a small item to place alongside their loved one. The cremation begins once you're ready.

Why all six steps happen under one roof: Many funeral homes don't own a crematory and contract with a third-party facility for the cremation itself. That's fairly standard practice. 


We own and operate our crematory in Jeffersonville, so your loved one stays with one team, in one building, under one ID tracking system, and we're not waiting on anyone else's outside schedule. You're welcome to tour the facility. I should say plainly that since I own a crematory, my view on outsourcing is not a neutral one. Take it for what it is.

How long does it take to cremate a body?

Roughly a 4-hour cycle inside the retort, and up to 5 to 6 hours for larger individuals. After the cycle completes, the chamber needs 1 to 2 hours to cool before ashes can be safely handled. Processing, meaning metal removal and grinding bone fragments into ash, adds another 30 minutes to an hour. Full in-facility time runs approximately 5.5 to 7 hours.


How long until you get the ashes back? At Magnolia, most families receive their loved one's ashes within 7 to 10 business days. Providers who outsource to a third-party crematory wait on that facility's schedule. Ours is in our own building.


Timing can also be affected by paperwork, and this is where how the cremation process works differs between the two states we serve. In Kentucky, no one may cremate a body, or transport it for cremation, without a permit from the coroner of the county where the death occurred (KRS 213.081). That applies to every death in the Commonwealth, not just coroner cases.


Indiana works differently. A crematory there needs a burial transit permit from the local health officer plus either the completed death certificate or, when the death fell under the coroner's authority, a release for cremation from the coroner (IC 23-14-31-27). In most cases, hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice facilities release immediately. But coroner holds, autopsy requirements, or holiday delays can push the timeline. What are the different types of cremation?

A few different terms come up when families research cremation, and not all of them describe options available in Indiana and Kentucky.

Flame-based cremation (what we offer)

This is the most common and accessible method, and it's what the six steps above describe. Flame-based cremation is legal everywhere in the United States and remains typically the most affordable option. Magnolia specializes in it, and we perform every cremation in our own facility.

Alkaline hydrolysis (water cremation)

Also called aquamation, this process uses heated water and an alkali solution instead of flame, and it returns bone fragments to the family just as flame cremation does. As of 2026, alkaline hydrolysis is not legal in Indiana or Kentucky. For more information about aquamation, we have an article that covers the process, cost, and legal status in detail.

Direct cremation vs. cremation with a service

These aren't different cremation methods. They're different service packages.


Direct cremation means cremation happens shortly after death without a formal viewing or funeral service beforehand. This is what Magnolia specializes in. Families often hold a memorial or celebration of life later, on their own terms and timeline.


Cremation with a service includes embalming, a public viewing or visitation, and a funeral service before the cremation process takes place. That adds cost quickly, because it requires embalming, facility rental, staff time, and typically a ceremonial casket. The National Funeral Directors Association puts the national median for a funeral with viewing and cremation at $6,280 in its 2023 General Price List Study, the most recent one published.

Median figures come from the NFDA 2023 Member General Price List Study and cover funeral home goods and services only, not cemetery plots, monuments, or markers. NFDA publishes no national median for direct cremation, so the $995 is our own published price rather than a national comparison.

What happens to the ashes after cremation?

Once you receive your loved one's ashes, you have several meaningful options.

Keeping ashes at home

Both states we serve allow it directly. Indiana law states that cremated remains may be retained by the person having legal control over them (IC 23-14-31-44). Kentucky law says that once the ashes are delivered, the person receiving them may keep or transport them anywhere in the Commonwealth without a permit (KRS 367.97524). Many families display an urn in a special place, either permanently or until they decide on something else.


A note for Catholic families: The Vatican's 2016 instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo asks that ashes rest in a sacred place such as a cemetery, rather than being kept permanently at home, scattered, or divided. A 2023 follow-up note allowed a family to keep a small portion somewhere personally significant. If faith is a factor, ask your parish.

Scattering in a meaningful location

Ashes can be scattered on private property (with the owner's permission), in national parks and forests (check individual park rules), in bodies of water at least 3 nautical miles from shore per EPA guidelines, or in designated scattering gardens at cemeteries.


Always follow local, state, and federal rules and get necessary permissions before scattering.

Burial in a cemetery

Ashes can go into a traditional cemetery plot, a smaller cremation plot, or a columbarium (a structure with niches built for urns). Cemetery burial gives family a permanent place to visit.

Sharing ashes or creating memorial items

Dividing ashes among family members is common. Small keepsake urns and memorial jewelry each hold a portion, so more than one person can keep their loved one close. Some companies also work a small amount of ash into glass art, memorial diamonds, biodegradable urns that grow into trees, or fireworks.

Is it normal to notice a bone fragment in the urn?

Occasional visible fragments are normal and don't mean anything went wrong. What varies most between cases is color, not texture, ranging from white to gray to darker tones depending on bone density and cause of death. Fine particles can also settle before you receive the urn.

What happens to metal implants and dental work during cremation?

Surgical implants like hip replacements, knee replacements, pins, and screws survive intact. We separate them from the ashes using magnets and hand sorting, then recycle them unless you tell us otherwise before cremation. Dental work doesn't survive intact and can't be visually identified afterward. It's separated out the same way. Pacemakers are never returned, since they can pose a shock risk once removed.

Can a family get gold dental crowns back after cremation?

Not afterward. Once cremated, gold crowns no longer look like gold and can't be separated out for a family. Removing dental work is also typically outside a crematory's scope. If you want it back, you will need to arrange for a dentist to remove it before cremation.
